Bit the bullet and bought the ebook edition of Metamagical Themas. With that purchase, I had 85 ebooks on that vendor-specific platform. I also had a spreadsheet catalog list, untouched since July last year, of 76 titles, so updating to current wasn't a from-scratch chore at least.

Thinking about Dad's capacity to rant about how, for example, "Democans and Republicrats, they're all the same, all politicians are crooked", I just put my finger on my unease with that narrative. It's the monochrome, all-or-nothing thinking. The derailing of meaningful conversation about politics was just data points in mapping Dad's narcissism. Conflate position with party, reduce party to posturing, and tada everything's meaningless.

I'm pretty sure I learned this back in my college psych studies, but it just sank in to a new level: "Black and white thinking" is a disorder. There's a more concise term for it in the professional vocabulary: "splitting". It has nothing to do with "split personality" (in current technical parlance, now known as "dissociative identity disorder") nor the Greek etymological roots of the word schizophrenia. It simply means that the patient identifies themself and others in polar terms. He never killed anyone and never robbed a bank, so in his narrative he IS "a good guy". Nevermind all the shitty things he did short of murder or grand theft - they don't count because he never killed anyone.
