Last night's home movie pick was A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001). I saw it in the theater with Dad and maybe once since. I'd forgotten how awkward and unsettling the David character was in the first act. Still moves me to tears at unexpected moments. There's a lot to the movie from a film-student perspective; one dimension is that Spielberg directed it as an homage to Kubrick, evoking techniques from The Shining and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

There's a bonus feature in the "Breaking Bad" late seasons DVDs about the staging of a scene with a truckload of chicken batter buckets at border customs. Shot in one long take, I thought of that in A.I. as the cam follows Teddy through the Flesh Fair from the entry to lost+found.
