New Yorker: "Taking On the NRA"
The power of the NRA lies in a tight focus on a single, unifying narrative: liberals want to march door-to-door seizing your sacred guns, and ironically, right-wing politicians (who are happy to shove every popular interest under the bus to serve the corporatocracy), are the only champions standing in their way. - Which would all be hilarious if it wasn't so deadly, because the idea of "bearing arms" being a "right" is pretty radically liberal in itself. And most especially in the way the NRA packages and sells it: primarily for personal defense against the myth of rampant "home invasions"... not the 2nd Amendment's explicit rationale, national defense in the form of "well-regulated militia". And the humility of its dedicated membership is equally powerful: gun-regulation ideologues see themselves as more "invested" in the issue, yet NRA members are more likely to write legislators, phonebank for and donate to gun-deregulationist politicians.

The Socratic Method is very easy to fumble and then what comes across is just patronizing/condescending.

Self-confidence and decisiveness are attractive; overconfidence, pushyness, poor impulse control and arrogance, not so much.
