FastCompany: spotting emotional intelligence
- Humans evolved with a relatively huge proportion of the brain engaged in analyzing nonverbal emotional cues. Your average human is pretty good at rapidly assessing other peoples' intelligence, interest/intentions, personality and "character" (i.e. integrity or respect for social norms like marital fidelity).
- Everyone tends to overestimate their social skills; but those with poorer skills tend to overestimate them more.
- So then how do we spot people of high emotional intelligence? They "...tend to be cool-headed, optimistic and altruistic."
- Extroversion correlates with high EIQ; low EIQ tends to magnify unpleasant feelings in social interaction.
