You'd think after so many years, I'd be able to manage backups in my sleep. But no. I am at least pretty satisfied with the strategy I've ironed out - nightly encrypted backups to a removable drive, backed by on-demand sync to free cloud storage. I would have preferred one-way backup in lieu of the cloud widget's syncing decisions, as it's a bit of a drag to have to manually rearrange folder structure in the cloud when I want to change up my local filing conventions. But certainly something I can live with... (...more)

Shopped TROSA's mega thrift store in Durham; lunch at Bull City Burgers and Brewery (meh); and The Purple Fence. Back in RDU, we revisited Garage Brothers, and checked out Peterson's Consigning Design.

MicroZap: TX startup uses microwaves to mold-proof bread, kill MRSA in hospital laundry etc. Patent issued 2017; uniform wave application kills microorganisms without cooking/superheating. When we visited Historic Yates Mill Park last week, there was a movie p... (...more)

Ran a dishwasher load; checked out Deja Vu thrift and the comic book shop on Buck. Jones Rd.; State Farmer's Mkt for ginger root, eggs and a bison jim; emptied vac canister; vacuumed the whole place. Basic Emergency Supply Kit FEMA publishes a handy checklist of basic disaster-preparedness kit. The single most complicated consideration is "at least 3 days' supply of nonperishable food". Prepper blogs often discuss MREs in this context. There's at least one very good reason to take these prepper-tar... (...more)

Only after I already committed my application for a city government position did I realize I had left the question about my past 10 years of residential addresses incomplete. They wanted it in a very specific format, including county of residence, and years and months at each address. Fortunately I had a spreadsheet list handy, but on review I noticed I had taken merely educated guesses at some of the transition dates. I was also reminded that there were not just one, but two points at which I was technica... (...more)
