You'd think after so many years, I'd be able to manage backups in my sleep. But no. I am at least pretty satisfied with the strategy I've ironed out - nightly encrypted backups to a removable drive, backed by on-demand sync to free cloud storage. I would have preferred one-way backup in lieu of the cloud widget's syncing decisions, as it's a bit of a drag to have to manually rearrange folder structure in the cloud when I want to change up my local filing conventions. But certainly something I can live with... (...more)

Try to check email; TBird reports my password is incorrect. Hotmail/Outlook/Live recently reformatted the web UX. Coincidence? I think not; there's a history of needing adapter Tbird extensions to pass credentials to Hotmail. Turns out MS added some switches in the web UX "settings" pages, and turned off POP3 access by default. My POP3 and SMTP server addresses were outdated too. To their credit, MS has gotten very good about showing the required server addresses and ports right there in the settings page.... (...more)

It's been long enough since Barracuda terminated their free cloud storage that I can't even find my own blog post noting the event. Nor can I find a post (THE post?) about general backup strategy, just a later post about hardening practices to ensure recovery in a ransomware scenario. A comprehensive backup strategy needs to protect against loss or breach of a "primary working file repository". In Windows terminology, there are many places Windows itself will happily scatter files if the user l... (...more)

Thu wrap-up: There's no drama like alcohol drama! Dinner was the second half of a box of pierogi. Splashed that with some of the Sutter Home merlot that's been hanging around since the beginning of Lent. Overtired from poor sleep the previous night and the emotional impositions of the day, so I was asleep on-time. Accounts Personal backups (prev 2/20, tsk) Back in 2012-08 I implemented the TrueCrypt+Cobian+cloud secure backup strategy that's afforded me a lot of peace of mind. Something that's alway... securing free cloud storage posted: Sat 2013-08-17 14:25:27 tags: tech, backups
"Cloud storage" services have been around for years. I've been uniformly unimpressed until now, due to space limitations of free accounts and exorbitant pricing for useful amounts of space. Most recently I had some space on Dropbox, but 2GB base and half-GB bonuses for referrals was not quite a useful size, so it went unused. Enter: by Barracuda. Base size is 15GB, which is already ample, and then they add 5GB for signing up via referral link and verifying your email address. This is plenty suf... (...more)
