The rule of thumb for sign legibility is 1" character height = 40' visibility, i.e. 3" high lettering is legible up to 120'. Sans-serif fonts are more legible and most popular street / facility signage fonts are Helvetica, Frutiger, and Clearview. source: Mental Floss We got in around midnight last night (as evidenced by the "your Lyft driver is here" text at 11:45) and didn't wind down to sleep until after 1. Slept in til after 9. Unpacked, updated accounts registers and here I am. I finished 2 ... (...more)

Dunno why it has to take 5 days to pull by CU from bank, when other bank-to-bank xfers take only 2-3 days. Elizabeth Warren is calling for mass removal of the board of a certain Big Commercial Bank in light of the new revelation that they arm-twisted scads of car loan customers into redundant insurance - on top of last year's fake account scandal, and their uniquely perverse insistence on fighting instead of just "making it right" with customers maximally bludgeoned with overdraft fees by sequence shuf... The top comments on Amazon are that the idea of "The 5 Second Rule" can be explained in one well-written blog post, or gleaned from the pertinent TEDx Talk (starting ~19:00), so don't waste your money. Here's the tl;dr version: As soon as you have an impulse to do something, start counting down mentally from 5, because you have 5 seconds to take action. If you don... (...more)

When I was in high school I had this idea that basically, screw college! I was going to write swords-and-sorcery novels and/or RPG material. I might never be the next Stephen King or (as Dad put it) "write the great American novel"; but I'd heard repeatedly "do what you love and the money will follow", and genre fiction and RPGs were what I loved. Looking back, I realize that was adorably naive of me; very few writers (e.g. Raymond Feist) surface successfully from diving in with neither life experience nor... (...more)
