In 1932, RE Howard got his first Conan story, "The Phoenix on the Sword" published in Weird Tales.
40 years later, Michael Moorcock published his first Elric novel: anti-hero intentionally conveyed as a counterpoint or antithesis of Conan. Physically sickly and weak, dependent on "potions" (drugs) to function. Urbane, subtle, bookish, prone to melancholy. Royal, regal, yet unattached to his privilege. Sentimental, even empathic where his kin and whole society were effete and cruel.

"Appendix N" of Gygax's 1979 Dungeon Masters Guide for 1st Edition D+D (aka "Advanced" D+D) recommended Conan and Elric, among others, as inspiration for aspiring Dungeon Masters. As a new hobbyist in my tweens and teens I devoured all the "Appendix N" I could get my hands on. I enjoyed the Conan adventures, but Moorcock keenly understood his audience - I identified so much more with Elric than with Conan.
