I did a little shopping at Target before I hit the gym yesterday. By long habit, I was an up-the-calf white cotton tube sock kind of guy. Before she fell out with Sl.-, M.- gave me package of Hanes ankle socks, which I never opened but also never tossed or gave away. Then when I started doing the gym thing I felt self-conscious about my socks, which either trap heat and sweat or slip down to rumple around the ankle anyway, so I cracked open the ankle socks. Session #32: 3.3mi / 43m53s. 1.5mi at a 5.0mph jog, cooldown, .5mi at 5.4mph, cooldown, final stretch of a bit over a lap at 5.8mph.
That's right, close to 2 minutes clipped off my best time. What was different? First, I ran yesterday, so today defied the conventional "train every other day" wisdom. But the every-other-day thing is intended to promote cross-training, so that a) stressed tissue gets a chance to heal and b) the little oddball muscles that don't get worked in your main exercise do get some...

Session #31: 3.3 mi / 46m26s. 7.4mph is sustainable for a half-lap, but that's my limit - I shot for 7.5, and it just takes more core muscle power than I have. I can feel a pronounced difference in my calf tone, and somewhat in my quadriceps; but the off-day calisthenic schedule has been spotty at best, so my hamstrings, glutes, hips and abs just aren't up to sprinting yet.
