I've been kicking the idea around in my head for a while about working up a few D+D adventures, but the big problem I get stuck on is "interesting and novel to the players, while remaining manageable and flexible for the DM". D+D is a storytelling framework, where I bog down in trying to be "original" when it's really much easier to adapt and remix other designers' material. Remix is a valid form of creativity.

So the idea I had was to deconstruct, re-skin and embellish a familiar story in a setting where the players probably wouldn't recognize it. I'm not talking "remake LotR with Sauron as a Spelljammer imperial despot" ...although that's not an entirely terrible concept. More along the lines of reskinning the classic "Temple of Elemental Evil" or "Scourge of the Slavelords" campaigns.

The other D+D thing that's been kicking around my mind since I decided to mothball my Artificer is how I want my Ranger build to work when we get the DM's planned endpoint of 16th level. Which probably means something like "don't plan your L16 build choices too deeply, because L15 is probably the last level you'll actually get to play through". The main problem is choosing a Rogue subclass. Assassin seemed obvious for a long time but Soulknife offers a lot too. The Psychic Blades feature is actually less interesting than Psi-bolstered Knack and Psychic Whispers.
