Nick of "G - The Gang" guild started "UDC" (an informal "Ultimate Duel Championship") yesterday. Line up the top ... 10,000 active players? by level, invite folks to probe up the list to find the highest person they can hit, and re-sort accordingly. I found my limit where I beat Sir Bill of "Eagles" guild, but couldn't beat Quetzalcoatl of "Warriors of Blood" with my "stock" pierce loadout. BUT! it's almost certainly not my actual best possible attack loadout.

To wit, [ Layla / Remiel / Odin ] should be decisively better than [ Remiel / Odin / Kitsune ].
I just keep the latter parked because it's easier than reconfiguring Layla's alliance for the oddball times I do want to reach high at the opportunity cost of losing general Monkey King's token conservation power.

So I circled back when my guild wasn't mid-battle, and reached as high as Soulslayer of "Redemption" (albeit on their health loadout, not strict defense). But that got me thinking -
is [ Katherine / Hera / Azriel ] my best possible defense loadout? It's a sticky question that boils down to - which is better: the sum of 3 generals' powers, or 2 generals each magnified by Layla's factor of +67.8% ? Probably the latter.

Katherine: Physical Resist +105; with Layla == (105 * 1.678) = 176.19
Hera: all 4 Ele Resists +80, theoretically equal to 256 P.Resist; w/Layla == 429.568
Azriel: 6.8% of Divine Power (1495) to P.Resist == 101.66; w/Layla == 170.585

So... Hera is far and away the MVP, then Kat, and Azriel in very close third place.
Layla / Hera / Kat == 429.56 + 176.9 = 606.46
Kat / Hera / Azriel == 256 + 105 + 101.66 = 462.66
QED, a Layla-led defense alliance is decisively better than my lazy-no-Layla-shuffle loadout.

Azriel pulls ahead of Kat by L80, with effective P.Resist of 116.x; but Marcus eventually beats all but Hera, so I'm leaning away from spending crystals to uncap Azriel any further just yet.
