Many times over the years I've tripped over the problem of variable baseline volume levels, particularly in music recordings. This MP3 is too soft, that AAC is relatively too loud, a recording of Holst's "Planets" goes from inaudible (and therefore largely unappreciable) to annoying the neighbors within one movement. Turns out most modern media-player software has automatic gain control features available, but it might be called something different and buried among an overwhelming array of settings-options. "Automatic Gain Control" isn't even a phrase I would thing of; I was web-searching for "adaptive volume" and just got lucky that The Algorithm led me to the community terminology.

There's a drama that quietly unfolded in American Mensa's national board in December, which eventually resulted in removal of some of those board members by a judicial committee of previous chairs. Info trickled out in dribs and drabs to the general membership. Yesterday an involved regional group member posted a much more coherent and comprehensible report than what I'd seen before. It put me eerily in mind of how the ultra-right infiltrated and corrupted NGOs, from within by gaming the procedures of internal governance, ahead of the Nazi domination of the German parlaiment ("Reichstag") in the 1920s. Mensa being an iconic organization of the kind of intellectualism that fascists hate and fear makes it a sort of a lightning-rod or coal-mine canary for fascist culture war offensives.
