Today's vocabulary word is "epistolary", as in "the epistolary New Testament" (the books consisting of epistles - letters - to the churches at Rome, Corinth, Ephesus etc.). The novel "Dracula" (Bram Stoker, 1897) is an "epistolary novel", i.e. having narrative developed in the form of a series of letters; diary entries and newspaper articles also qualify. "Dangerous Liaisons" (1782), "The Screwtape Letters" (1942), and "The Color Purple" (1982) are other examples. It's more common to see "partly epistolary" works than a whole novel of epistolary contrivance.
