Safest Cities in New York State
No surprise most of the safest "cities" are farming hamlets and richie-rich enclaves of population 200-. I particularly noted Altamont, a Capital Region exurb / farming economic center where we went to The Fair most summers when I was a kid. Anyway... Scrolling down to the safest cities of pop 25K+ because that's where there's any jobs and/or culture, we get:

Carmel: 2.5 crimes per 1,000 residents
Long Beach: 2.5 per 1,000
Glen Cove: 3.3 per 1,000
Harrison: 5.3 per 1,000
Ramapo: 5.3 per 1,000
Yorktown: 6.1 per 1,000
Cicero: 6.2 per 1,000
Port Chester: 7.5 per 1,000
Orangetown: 8.0 per 1,000
Southampton: 10.2 per 1,000

"Most crime-ridden NY cities" included some surprisers like Niagara Falls (because tourism), Buffalo and Rochester (because rust-belt decay?) and ... syracuse (college town), Albany (capital) and Schenectady? Hmm.

Scrolling further down to the map though, what immediately pops out is the clustering - safest larger cities in the southern triangle between PA, NJ, CT and the coast; safest small burgs in a loose line insulated a bit west of the Hudson River / Thruway corridor. Curiously, high-crime cities are mostly situated near the state's borders.
