Neither Russa nor China ever achieved "communism".
Karl Marx proposed "socialism" as the middle road between unrestrained capitalism and his ideal of [moneyless, stateless, classless] communism. Both the Russian and Chinese "communist" revolutions sold themselves on the promises of communism - but even in their most idealistic eras, never managed to purge internal corruption to progress past a despotic semi-socialism. More often they merely foundered under corrupt dictatorships that had to keep stealing technological innovation from the West and propping up any semblance of progress in the heartlands with colonial annexation and exploitation of uutlands. The one smart initiative China's dictator/bureaucrat circle took in recent history was massive investment in infrastructure, which rapidly propelled them to the world's second-place economic power and is currently bearing fruit in a flurry of technological trailblazing in energy, physics, and space exploration.
If someone calls you a "communist", you can be pretty sure they don't even know what "communism" is.
It's about as meaningful as a fearful dog barking at strangers.
