Montana "Cream of Oats" oat bran hot cereal claims 9g protein per 150 cal = .0600 p.index
Bob's Red Mill oat bran lags significantly at 7g / 150 cal = .0467 p.index. That's "B-" vs. "C-"
Quaker is a close 3rd place with 6g / 140 cal = .0429 p.idx
Supposedly Montana is growing a "proprietary" oat strain (SowNaked hull-less) and taking extra care to ensure no field contamination with other grains, hence the higher protein. The existence of hull-less oats makes me question whether we're trading off the primary thing that oats are good at, namely beta glucan "soluble fiber", for a modest protein bump that has to be augmented with PB powder or other protein-dense additions anyway. But web search results state hull-less oat varieties have comparable or in some cases even more beta glucan than conventional oats.
Soluble fiber by oat bran cereal brand:
- Montana: Doesn't break down fiber content by soluble vs. insoluble; but oat bran cereal fiber is typically around 50% soluble, so assume the labeled 6g total dietary fiber represents 3g beta glucan. The website currently claims 10g protein, 7g fiber per serving but the package I received a few months back was labeled 9g/6g.
- Bob's Red Mill, not labeled "organic" or "certified gluten free": 7p.g / 150 cal; 7g total fiber
- Bob's Red Mill, organic: 6p.g / 160 cal, 6g total fiber
- Bob's Red Mill, certified GF: 5 p.g / 150 cal, 4g total fiber
- Quaker: 6 p.g / 140 cal; 5g total fiber, of which 3g specifically soluble fiber
- - but I suspect that's a not-very-thinly-veiled manipulation of rounding protocol.
