a kind fellow showed me how to use the Smith machine for a few basic movements
2 sets each overhead presses (in front of and behind head) and curls (overhand, underhand)
the usual 30-minute HIIT sprints for cardio

Afterthoughts: isn't the main attraction of the Smith machine that squats work the most muscles in one motion?
If you get to add just 1 machine to target muscles that Smith squats doesn't, what gives maximum coverage?
What about just 2 other machines? 3?
- AKSHUWALLY, Smith squats are "safer" than free-weight squats, but engage less core stabilizers.
- So, sure, isolate large muscle groups with Smith squats; but also regular planks for strong stabilizers.
- Cable rows (or lat pulldowns) are the optimal complement to Smith squats for upper back and core training.
- If you get to add a third machine movement, then chest-presses target the most "new" muscle.

If you go to feed the cat wet food before the feeder releases dry food then you have to either lug out the dry food bag, or scrounge from the feeder cell before it advances.
If we're going to habitually jump the gun and feed before the feeder then we may as well change the timer to advance at 5:30 or 5:45 instead of 6 so the feeder actually saves labor and supports a routine instead of just vague inconsistent fumbling.
