Shortly before the move I got interested in alternatives to techbroligarch Alphabet Maps.
- OpenStreetMaps is a project that aims to supply data to mapping websites and navigation apps
- OrganicMaps is one of better navigation app projects that use OSM's data
- check learnosm.org for how to contribute to OSM data collection / quality improvement
- apps like StreetComplete and EveryDoor gamify and simplify OSM data collection
- bc they're not commercial/monetized, OSM and downstream apps need volunteers to add and update data

Charlotte-based Atrium moved to merge with WakeMed; UNC Health made an unsolicited $5B competing offer to merge with WakeMed. A UNCH / WakeMed merger would have had 80% of the regional healthcare market. My first thought was "well that's probably good because UNCH is a nonprofit state government agency". But studies show that nonprofits raise rates just like for-profits when they achieve monopoly (or near monopoly) dominance in a market. So the UNCH-WakeMed merger was blocked. (Duke Health is the 4th big player in the Wake region healthcare market.)

In NJ we found Old Tyme was cheaper, with more protein per slice, than Nature's Own. Alas, Old Tyme doesn't distribute in the RDU area. I don't particularly care that Nature's Own came under fire for using ascorbic acid as a preservative - ascorbic acid can be industrially synthesized or sourced in nature, C6H6O6 is C6H6O6 regardless of source, impurities can creep into the supply chain from either direction, and I think it's a little stupid that the FDA forces manufacturers to distinguish as long as impurity safety standards are met.

But I do care that Nature's Own reportedly tested high for glyphosate.

top commercial budget alternatives: Papperidge Farm Farmhouse White; Dave's Killer Bread

9 distinct supermarket chains w/ locations within 10 mi of downtown CH:
Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Wegman's, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Aldi, Lowes, Fresh Market, Weaver Street Market

Aldi's Simply Nature flourless sprouted bread mimics Ezekiel but costs much less
TJ's Organic Super Bread - negligible contaminant levels
Wegman's Organic: less protein per slice
Weaver St, Fresh Market: complicated; I'm not inclined to puzzle it out
Whole Foods 365: whole wheat sandwich bread tested high (1040 ppb) for glyphosate
- That's 5x more than Nature's Own butter bread (190 ppb)
Food Lion, Harris Teeter: low protein per slice, no organic claims
