Was wound up into the wee hours for no apparent reason. Dragging today.

I wanted a new FB profile pic and had decided I would model one after the "golden earring" 'shop job parodying Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring". Turns out Vermeer chose a very strained, unnatural pose for his model. Striking the basic pose was nontrivial, holding the camera to emulate the 'shopped version was even harder, and I lost some of the semblance with my other arm getting in-frame to click the mouse to snap the shot. Good enough ofr my purpose though.

Photo taken, I then set figuring out how to compose in GIMP a 4-way of the original Vermeer, 'shop job, my pose, and an FXed version. Turns out you can't just copy from one image and paste into the other - you have to add a layer and paste into the new layer, or I think there's a right-click context menu command to create new layer and paste in one swoop. Either way, the point is... layers! So now with some basic pixel arithmetic it should now be trivial to digitize those Miami Music festival event fliers.

tech notes: my digital camera probably could have got a much higher-quality original to work with, but that would entail working in the bathroom mirror, and since I was going for FX anyway, original quality wasn't really a concern. I ended up snapping my source selfie in Skype using the lappy's integral cam. The FX process was just heavy-handed sharpening filter and then the oilify filter with a 4 or 5-pixel radius.
