So stressed out that I can barely breathe sometimes. And then I get on the 'mill and focus narrows to just that: breathing. Weighed in at 191# today, which is probably a six-month low, perhaps an all-year low. For dinner I spooned out some sauteed veggie mix and 5-bean stew into a pan with a little olive oil, let that heat up, then added a couple beaten eggs. Let that set, dished onto a Flatout wrap, topped wtih a slice of XS cheddar and a turkey dog. I overdid the veggie/bean part and decided that I li... (...more)

Windows 7 doesn't have a Desktop Cleanup Wizard, yet periodically it makes desktop shortcuts to files on remote drives disappear anyway. As far as I can tell, this is related to an automatic diagnostic scan that reports to Windows Action Center, which treats shortcuts to unconnected drives as "issues" to be "repaired"... lol This TechNet thread illustrates the user community investigation process. The threshold to trigger shortcut removal seems to be more than 4 shortcuts to unavailable files/folders. ... (...more)

Slept decently. A couple bananas for breakfast. Had a sad little call with Dad and a much more constructive convo with Mom and if Hell can contain itself for another couple weeks, then I think 2013 may somewhat redeem 2012's disappointments. Managed to break a CFL bulb as I was trying to get dressed and get out and about, and ventilation isn't a selling point in my little apartment, so I had to do a little relay dance holding my breath between spurts of getting glass vacuumed up and finishing getting dr... Fell asleep after midnight waiting for the chili to cool enough to stick in the fridge. Woke at 5:30 all NUUUU MAH CHILIZ... and the outside of the pot was STILL a bit warm. But it was tightly covered from the time I took it off the burner, and it passed the sniff, taste and mouthfeel tests. So I wouldn't feed it to children, but 2 servings for breakfast didn't hurt me any. My recipe source said 32g protein per serving at 8 servings per double-recipe; cross-checking with other references says a pound ra... (...more)
battery conditioning in Win 7 posted: Tue 2013-01-15 20:40:37 tags: tech
Win 7 (and Vista) provides power user-definable power-management profiles, but there is no way through the GUI to set to the OS to "do nothing" when running on battery power and the machine reports battery power remaining at 5% or less ("critical" level). The choices are sleep, hibernate, or shut down. None of the above is not a choice. Strangely, the command-line interface gives more control. From a command prompt with admin privileges, powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_BATTERY BATACTIONCR... (...more)
